Reviewer: Richard Morgan

The Marantz SR4000 comes from a company which has a long standing reputation for creating quality audio-video gear whose design emphasis is placed firmly on sound (and more recently video) quality. It's a company dedicated to musicality and its products reflect that philosophy.

Marantz has put its development and construction efforts into things that make the SR4000 perform well. That's why you won't find a bunch of bells and whistles that may look impressive yet do little to enhance the overall sonic quality of the unit.
The SR4000 features in-built Dolby Digital decoding (backed up by Dolby Pro Logic) but there's no DTS Surround decoding. Rather, to cater for people who want this feature, Marantz is relying on its direct 5-channel input facility and MPEG processing to interface with an external DTS decoding (or DVD player with DTS built-in). The 6-channel input can also be used for other sound inputs both now and, more importantly, in the future.

The unit delivers 80 watts RMS to the front left and right front and centre channels, and 40 watts RMS to the rear surround speakers. It's not the same power across all channels, but the power is what's called 'quality' watts, so there is not likely to be any real-world difference between the two ratings ( which works out to 3dB, or about the smallest difference our ears can detect anyway).

There's an active subwoofer outlet and input for seven source components and let's not forget the tuner function is in-built so when you listen to FM it's free high quality music. There's also a choice of optical and coaxial digital inputs and while the rear speaker connectors are spring loaded the front and centre and binding posts.

Internally it's quality throughout and this is highlighted in the performance with ultra clean sound and little in the way of false effects to shroud the performance. The obvious lack of distortion assists in the surround sounds, both in overall quality and directional interaction. And it easily benefits dialogue via the centre channel, which is clear and articulate even under heavy soundtrack conditions.

The Marantz SR4000 is an impressive receiver whose 'goodies' (responsible for very dependable performance) are mostly hidden.
