The abysmal state of the dollar has not been kind to products like Onkyo's TX-DS484X AV receiver. Thankfully, however, the devalued dollar has not affected this receiver's performance or overall value and it continues to affirm Onkyo's place as one of the prime AV electronics developers in the world.
In typically Onkyo fashion this receiver is a timely balance of technology and style. Its appearance is business like and functional yet still aesthetically pleasing and the option of black or gold brushed aluminium front panel finishes is a nice touch.

The 575X is rated at 100 watts into 6 ohms (based on EIAJ rating), which equates to around 80 watts RMS. That's into five channels, all channels driven, which means there's plenty of grunt for most mid market applications.
It handles all relevant surround sound processing systems onboard (including DTS Surround) and can create a variety of acoustic states for people who like such things. All processing, whether surround or acoustic is handled in a digital domain so degradation is nil and flexibility is maximum. The latest 96kHz/24-bit audio digital-to-analogue converters are up with the front of the technological pack.
Each of the five channels features multi-way binding posts with banana-plug compatibility, even the rear channels. Top marks with this one. The same goes for the 5.1 channel external inputs that are primed to handle a variety of technologies.
Onkyo's WRAT (Wide Range Amplifier Technology) pushes the frequency response capabilities of the TX-DS484 out to 100kHz, which gives the unit some of the spec needed for DVD-Audio (speakers permitting). The power section is also heavily specified with discrete power amplifier circuitry for all five channels, a high-current low impedance drive and an oversized isolated transformer - and you can read that as really solid audio performance!
Under operation the unit is a both a breeze and a pleasure to operate with easily absorbed control-function logic. Its sound is wide range, balanced and clean. A reasonably powerful, flexible and well-designed solution to your home theatre needs.
