With the X-5 Series, Danish manufacturer, Jamo, has aimed for a speaker market that wants as much sonic power as possible for the least cost possible. It's also a range that breaks new ground in cosmetic design and appeals to a younger audience that wants speakers that offer flexibility between divergent applications such as PCs, Playstation, and DVDs.

The X-5 Series is perfectly at home in a home theatre scenario. There are two different floor-standing speakers (X-570 and X-550), along with a centre speaker (X-5CEN), two compact main/surround speakers (X-530 and X-510) and a 100 watt powered subwoofer (X 5SUB). The series has been designed for easy upgrade from stereo to full blown home theatre systems.

The system comprising X550 front speakers, X-510 rears and X-5CEN centre channel is the pick of the range as far as value for money, though you can buy cheaper by optioning smaller fronts and go for more performance by choosing the X-570 model for the front.

You can also start with a stereo pair and add more speakers as finances permit and maintain the sonic integrity of the system since all speakers match in timbre and style.

Part of the unusual styling of the X-5 Series is due to the tweeter. It's a new design incorporating a 25mm dome drive unit with a large EWG (Elliptical Wave Guide) horn that's designed to enhance the quality and linearity of treble sounds and improve their overall presence in the sonic spectrum by maximising the directivity of sounds.

This theory is that the controlled directivity from the elliptical horn makes sound from the main and surround speakers less coloured by reflections from the floor and ceiling in the room, and the positioning of the centre speaker becomes less critical because it can also be located below the screen or hung on the wall above the television. For the most part it works well.

The model X-550 front speaker is a two-way bass reflex design that handles 200 watts long term, has a high sensitivity rating and features twin 165 midrange/low end drivers. The C-5 CEN centre channel features a vertically mounted elliptical horn tweeter flanked by twin low range drivers, while the X-510 is almost a miniature version of the front speakers, designed for stand or shelf mounting.

The beauty of this Jamo system is that you don't need a lot of power to get sensational sound levels happening. There's also well maintained sonic quality at these levels with little in the way of distortion to jag on the ears. That doesn't. however absolve you of your responsibility to use good amplification, you just a need fewer watts to get impressive performance.
